Zeal Education Group was not the only firm competing for the Stamford Public Schools superintendent search. The district ran a competitive bidding process, and Zeal's selection came down to two things Board President Andy George pointed to directly: "their strong presentation and client focus were key factors in their selection."
What followed was a search built on the kind of clarity that district leaders often hope for but rarely fully get. Senior Associate Dr. Eric J. Becoats described the process as "well outlined and easy to understand for all stakeholders" - a shared framework that gave the Board, district leaders, and the community a common understanding of how feedback would be gathered, how leadership needs would be identified, and how a final decision would be reached.
That framework started with listening. Zeal's team worked directly with the Stamford Board of Education to surface differing priorities - one member emphasizing student achievement, another focused on communication or financial management - and helped the Board find common ground rather than choosing among competing views. Those early conversations, paired with significant community engagement, produced more than 70 stakeholder engagement sessions reaching 529 participants and a candidate pool of 27 applicants from 11 states.
George's letter describes the day-to-day experience of that process in specific terms. "Jeff and his team worked with us to develop a timeline that would accomplish the hiring of a Superintendent for the upcoming school year," he wrote. "We asked for extensive community outreach in developing a profile, which Zeal executed flawlessly." The team also guided the Board through the interview process itself, including a session specifically focused on eliminating hidden bias. When it came to shaping the interview panel, Zeal's Founder and CEO, Dr. Jeff Melendez, "provided frank advice on the composition of the interview panel, yet was open to our concerns."
The result was a unanimous Board vote, a decision that, in Becoats's view, reflected confidence in both the candidate and the process that produced them. "A well-structured search helps prevent individual preferences from becoming the only basis for a decision," he said. "It gives the Board agreed-upon criteria and a common understanding of what the district needs."
Zeal's involvement did not end at the vote. George noted the team was "at hand to offer assistance" through contract negotiations with the finalist, support that extended the engagement past the traditional finish line of a search. "Most importantly," George wrote, "the Zeal team went above and beyond delivering excellent client service to ensure a successful recruitment outcome. There were never any surprises. Jeff was available for a phone call at almost any moment."
Becoats's advice to other Boards navigating a search echoes the same theme that ran through Stamford's process from the start: "Be reflective and open to listen and hear other ideas." For Stamford, that openness, paired with a process everyone could actually follow, produced not just an appointment, but a Board that moved forward with unanimous support and a stronger foundation for what came next.
